Warning Signs — Don't Wait

These are signs that your child needs urgent medical attention. Come in right away or call us. ! High fever above 103°F (39.4°C) in any child, or any fever in a baby under 3 months ! Difficulty breathing, fast breathing, or noisy breathing (stridor, wheeze) ! Seizure (fits) — especially if lasting more than 5 minutes or first-time seizure ! Unresponsive, unconscious, or difficult to wake up ! Severe dehydration — sunken eyes, dry mouth, no urination for 8+ hours ! Persistent vomiting — unable to keep down fluids for more than 6 hours ! Head injury with vomiting, confusion, or loss of consciousness ! Rash with fever — especially spreading rash, red spots, or non-blanching spots ! Severe allergic reaction — swelling of face/lips/throat, hives with breathing difficulty ! Ingestion of a foreign body, medication, or toxic substance ! Severe abdominal pain — especially right-sided or with bloating/rigidity ! Newborn — not feeding, lethargic, yellow (jaundice), not passing urine ! Severe asthma attack — not responding to usual inhaler ! Any condition that a parent "feels" is serious — trust your instinct.
